It made use of nature's beauty in each setting to create visual depth and atmosphere, such as using the sun to create shadows in certain scenes. Other ILM effects shots include split screen and panoramic effects, creating a more cinematic image. Despite the film's "3D" sticker, DreamWorks did not film with 3D cameras; full 3D conversion for all scenes was done in post-production. The film made extensive use of natural lighting: it uses the reflection of the sun off water and rippling ocean waves to represent light beams from prisms, creating a surreal underwater-esque effect.
